~1 prep, ~ adv 1 directly under or below another object, used especially when one thing is covering or hiding another  (It's near where the railway goes underneath the road. | A translation was written underneath.)  (- see under1) 2 if someone is nice, shy, etc underneath, they really are nice, etc even though their behaviour shows a different character  (She seems aggressive, but underneath she's pretty shy.) ~2 n BrE the underneath the bottom surface of something, or the part of something that is below or under something else  (We need to paint the underneath with a rust preventer.)
